The Beach at Night on a Holiday

can be a Scary Place.
Or rather, an amusing one.

Stymied for something to do and with a serious want to hoop, I grabbed an old friend that I had a slightly creepy history with and hauled over to the beach. He did some sort of stick juggling and I hooped and all was well until the drunk people came. They were rambunctious, and I taught two of them to hoop. Sort of.

The one floundered about, dropping flat onto the sand and disregarding the space of the hoop to his balls's detriment. Then a few minutes later he came charging out of the ocean, straight at me, and pulled his boxers (swim trunks?) down around his knees.

His penis was small. The internet needed to know.

I moved out of the way, still spinning my hoop.

It was ridiculously easy to engineer some excuse to get my hoops back, and get them far away, and run up the long stairs and back to my car, my friend(?) in tow.

At least I got some good hooping in!

Yes... I do know it all.

Today was the fourth of July and I had it off from work - yay holidays I feel ambivalent about! I got into one of those introspective moods where you feel the space of a year very clearly - I remembered quite clearly where I was last year at the same time, and it made me want even more to start on my personal inventory. I haven't yet - I keep putting it off because I've been hitting the distraction and escapist outlets pretty hard lately.

Breaking the habit of a relationship is not hard exactly, I don't want to say it is hard, that gives it waaaay too much power. It is kinda hard though. I sometimes miss the feelings that went with knowing someone was there. But I don't miss HIM that much at all. I was actually relieved when I heard he had hopped into another relationship soon after, because it meant he wouldn't show up at the bars I was at like a fucking creepy stalker.

Hmm. I am not unaffected. Certainly. But I am less unaffected than I had feared, after a year and three months of being with someone. And so much happier!

I think I'm going to go hoop on the beach tonight.

Excercise Log - Running Nostalgia

I ran/walked my favorite path today, watched the sunset and the waves and the fire jugglers and people walking dogs. Particularly full of memory, I remember long ago running along this path in an ill prepared for half marathon. A little more recently, walking, talking and pretending to run with my good friend who moved and who I miss very much.

Took about eighty minutes of hard walking and some jogging. About right for 6 miles. Feels good, and I am going to start doing this at least three times a week. And every time I will do one more set of stairs!

Seventy-six Hours...

...of work this week between my two jobs. Ow. Next week, only seventy. After that, a relieving fifty.

Office job is in hospitality but has a high probability for at least my level of gothy.
Manual labor job is getting old. OLD I tell you. A few weeks more and I can quit.

Sadness. Breaking up with boyfriend Sunday or Monday. Love him, but not enough to make the space in my life to keep him. I could say "plenty of other fish" but for now I'm putting away my rod n' reel, and focusing on adventure.

Self inventory is about to happen. First step is easy. I am going to simply record physical locations, order and dates.

Funny about synchronicity. I asked the universe for a few more strong and unique female role models. They have manifested.

Also have manifested: Trees, a larger room with a less shared bathroom, shelves and more kitchen use, more skinny-ness, perfectly priced exercise hoops, a running partner, and a great feeling of well-being.

On the list: More money than I can use, clear, pale, perfect skin, a higher degree of skinny-ness, tidiness in my areas, a few certain pairs of shoes, a pair of black pants cut long enough to wear my four inch BCBG heels with, a few more discussion partners, platonic cuddle buddies of any gender closer than my current ones, more JOY!!!, and more.

I will be putting together a board with pictures of stuff and things I want, and be deciding about some of the more important things, like jobs, partner(s?), car, education, living space, ect. I've been writing stories about stuff in my life I'd like to see and experience.

Right now, my life feels right. I'm making the choices that feel good, that I feel good about, and I feel like everything is coming together.

Hoooops

So, I am slightly ashamed of my bloggery drivel when I read someone who writes good, interesting content, in part because I also could write at least a little better. Then I read someone else's blog and feel much, much less bad about my own.

In other news! I am a hooooper now! It needed extra ohs, because it is just oh so fun. My favorite video is this one, partially because I saw it first and can say it started the obsession.

I am not yet that good. I went to a class to try it, and my amazing teacher got me doing amazing right away - now I just have to practice up and learn some tricks :)

This man makes me smile. Doesn't he seem like a nice guy?

Tripp

Today I scored a reversible black and purple plaid pleated Daang Goodman Tripp skirt from goodwill - for $3.44 plus tax.

Are there two levels of Tripp? I think Daang Goodman is exclusive to boutiques, right? The quality of this skirt does seem higher than what I've seen at Hot Topic.

Anyway, since its about six inches too big I'm putting a sort of double pleat thing into the back by the zipper.

Super cute.

Oh Hai!

Its world goth day, apparently. I'd like to go do something interesting instead of lurking in my room and staring out the screen door at the sun, but, um, yeah. Maybe I'll paint that parasol I bought a while ago. It is one of those paper ones, currently baby blue but I see lots of black in its future.

Hmm.

*drinks tea*

Yes, I think something crafty is in order. Been dying to wear my new zippered dickies but they need some srs alteration - i impulsively cut the waistband and an inch down the butt to alter them smaller (I know better) and the resulting alteration I will fondly call vagina butt. So, hopefully without killing them further, I will work on those. While watching Dark Angel and drinking more tea, of course.

Self Help Books

I love them. I've been listening to "The Secret" audio book lately, and thinking both about what it suggests/claims and about self-help books in general.

In some ways, I don't like them so much. They tend to use really annoying, perky woo hoo! language. Lots of them are written by people who seem to be a bit egomaniacal with constant anecdotes of their own little successes. It can be hard to swallow as much as a book usually suggests in one sitting and then to try to use it on a practical level? Forget it!

Still, I think that they have their place. If it sounds right, if it feels right, and it harm none, then why not?

We could all use a bit of improving into our daily lives.

So back up, I want to babble about "The Secret" for a moment. It features some of the practical changes and examples of how the law of attraction works. The movie and the book kind of read like one of those sidebar ads you accidentally click and they claim with just a pomegranate and some straw you'll lose 30 pounds.

I grew up with an ineffective,  watered down version of the law of attraction. Basically an unbelieving mother going through the motions, who would spout the rhetoric but never act on it, utterly confusing and ultimately dissuading my punkass super logical twelve year old self to disregard it because Mommy sucks.

Somehow in between then and now, I grew up a little bit. And laugh, because sometimes, in my effort to put  the LOA in to action I end up doing the exact same song-and-dance as she did.

Guess we gotta back up again. LOA is basically that you have in your life what you think about most. Of course, it both is and is not that simple. Language matters. If you say or think: I hate fat, I am not going to be fat, I can't eat that 'cause it'll make me fat, and you go staring at fat people and hating how fat they are - most likely you're going to be having a losing battle against fat. Whereas if you stare at skinny people, rejoice in skinniness, tell yourself that you can eat whatever you want and be skinny, that you have a fast metabolism, that you've always been skinny, you're more likely to be skinny with no problem.

It takes some creativity if you're raised like me - despite intellectually knowing of the law of attraction, I still saw my mother obsess about not having money, tell me we couldn't afford things, berate herself for being fat and calling me fat at the slightest weight gain (I was model thin at the time - 105-110 pounds on a 5'7" small frame), and my dad was a whole new level of negativity.

Yet, despite that, I also saw some miracles. And now, I finally am a little less confused after some serious reading, some serious thought and observation, and a lot of years of just living.

So I guess I feel like I am ready to really jump this whole law of attraction business into high gear.
I'm working on the first step: what I want. Its a little

Yet, I find things are already coming to me. I know I want money - I got a decent gig that'll pay my rent next month (it is easy to get hired somewhere), found some money on the ground right as my tank was empty (I always have enough gas to go where I want to go), found some money I thought I lost a few months ago (money is everywhere and coming to me), and found a full time job that pays better and has better hours (it is easy to get hired somewhere).

I always land on my feet and on top of the game - this is something I've often thought in my darkest hours and it always comes true, one way or another. So now I want to fine tune it.

I guess though, coming back to it, this particular self-help thing, "The Secret" and LOA, is just my bag, baby. It is what I have chosen to believe in and what works for me. I like the idea that everything you think causes everything around you. I like the idea that the mind is just that powerful. I like thinking that every good thing that happens is because I was responsible for it, and not just some fate or luck. I've always avoided the clover, the rabbit's foot and the only wish I make on a star I expect to come true.

Life is good.

Go read, listen to or watch "The Secret." I am attracting people to talk to about how it has worked in their lives, and you could be one of them.

Wicked Lazy Detox Day/Clothes.

Health issues are a bitch. Not to be a pity party, but I will briefly say to those who do - stop consuming fake sweeteners! I knew this, yet over a few months have had a bit of an affair with Coke 0, drinking up to a 2-liter (gross, I know) a day. That doesn't do good things to your body, peachies. Nasty skin, never sleeping, serious stomach bloating, aching joints, some weight gain, mood downs and possibly other, TMI issues.

I quit a week ago, and after significant improvement decided today was a perfect opportunity for a detox day. Light, easy to digest food, lots of green tea and water, and I feel slimmer, more energetic, and less like ass.

Ok, now on to the real sort of substance.
I am in love with all the ladies out there that post regular pictures of their gothy wardrobe. Too lazy to link, google AdoraBatBrat, SophistiqueNoir, and gosh, so many others.

I'll post something someday, honest. Never to such frequency for these reasons:
1) In an attempt to remain less of a stuff horse, I don't want to exceed my current wardrobe size and would run out of new looks
2) I work 50 hours a week between an office and manual labor job, spend about 9 hours a week in the car, and still try to spend some time with my boyfriend and roommates, read books and exercise.
3) Lazy

Ok, excuses aside, I've been trying to vamp up the daily wear a bit. I have some really nice clothes. A friend suggested I get rid of the usual fallbacks - the t-shirts and plain jeans and never, ever go out the door in yoga pants. I should take her advice, she always looks fabulous and could create an amazing fashion blog if she so chose.

Kinda extreme to get rid of my beloved t-shirts, so for now I just try to avoid 'em when not at my srs labor job.

Here is a snap someone took while at a museum: Ok, never mind. Black on black in low light is not terribly impressive. And here is... *sigh* Ok, nvm. Where are the good pictures of me? Ok, fine. Here. Better than nothing:

A little bit billy from my recent vacation in NY. Slouchy after a long day walking and checking out the Metropolitan.

Confidence Building Exercises

This is what I googled today.

Sometimes I'm on top of the world! But when I fall... Well, I fall hard and tend to remain paralyzed, stunned and self loathing, and have a hard time getting back up. At least, I used to.
It really is easy to stand back up and start running again.

I really need to work on are interrupting myself when I go into a bad place and reminding myself daily of the good things, of all the amazing things in my life that are results of my hard work.

Mantras, affirmations are cheesy but really work well for me. It helps to write them down... I love the physical sensation of ink going onto paper, and to see the results of what is coming from my mind concretely laid down in my handwriting really cements it.

I remember a conversation where I was musing about the gradual goth takeover of my life that is occurring, and she said something along the lines of, "Well, maybe that is a good thing? Goths always look super confident."

When I googled "confident goth" one of the first pictures was the Lady of Manners of Gothic Charm School - a super confident person person indeed!

Paleontology Certification?

Why yes. As of today, Friday (Frihiiiday gotta get down on Friihiiiday... Oh guilty Glee) the Thirteenth, a fun day to celebrate for no reason other than a calender's idiosyncrasy, is also fabulous because I passed the oral exam for the paleo lab I work at!

Yay!!!!!!
So now I can go in any day of the week to work in my scientific abbatoir, my beautiful necropsy lab (though since it is summer and sunny and hot, probably just going to stick to labeling and curating mammal bones that are already cleaned up) and de-flesh the poor roadkill that park rangers bring me. I feel like a zoologist Bones, with a hapless, less handsome geologist partner Booth.

So no-one has ever failed the test. Whatever. I've still completed 215 hours to date of volunteer work and have learned masses about paleo stuff, not to mention getting that awesome exclusive tour in the back rooms of the American Museum of Natural History with this guy and handling all kinds of really awesome bones. It just makes my little heart blacker!

Note: Someone asked me if I was a suicide girl, someone else asked me what I was... I just said alt whatev because I'm very low maintenance most of the time to be stereotypical goth. Obviously, not a SG either. I had a mohawk and forgot about that kind of effect on the older generation - anyone so inclined to think ill of it kept their mouths shut and their faces clear - but I had already made my goofy, smiling impression long before anyway.

I read about targeted attacks on alt people, especially goths since thats probably where I get most of my influences, like here where some horrid things are done to goths. I wonder if having my practical, everyday, simple black on black has saved me from much of this? Yes I have short black hair and 14 visible piercings, but when that is toned down with plain black or pinstriped pants, flip flops, and some sort of black shirt, I suppose I blend pretty well. California is pretty liberal anyway, but that whole "California casual" has a huge effect on me. Wonder if the scene around here is like that too? LA has some great clubs that I've visited infrequently, and they are waaay more industrial, cyber, stompy than what I saw of SF's more romantic looks. What I saw of  Portland seemed super casual but I think thats because it was a show, not exclusively goth.

Unintentionally went to two shows from VNV Nation's latest tour (last year) in the US - Portland and San Diego. I would have still gone to both even if I had realized beforehand (what a durp, of course it was the same tour) but I was amused at myself. Portland seemed very casual but mostly all black, perhaps because VNV isn't completely goth and more industrial/electro? The San Diego show was even more casual - probably half the crowd was dressed normal or scene or something, the other half in various degrees of dark.

Wow. Started with fossils, moved on to prejudice, and into what little I know of my local goth scenes to VNV Nation shows.

Definitely enough babble for today.

Remember: Be a cheap drunk and cut back on the sleep!
Another study suggested that performance begins to degrade after 16 hours awake, and 21 hours awake was equivalent to a blood alcohol content of .08 percent, which is theblood alcohol limit for drunk driving in Canada, the U.S., and the U.K
Time to go to work!

I've had six hours of sleep in the last five days.

I'm a CorpGoth Now!

More on that later, once I better know which way the wind blows. Outlook is quite positive because there is no face to face time with clients. The only deciding factor will be just how conservative my boss is ^^

One thing I'm not...

...is (much of) a gamer.

Weird, because I'd always thought I'd make a good one.

A combination of a limited attention span, dislike of doing one thing at a time, slow reflexes, annoyance at arbitrary rules, and perhaps worst of all bad sportmanship rule out a majority of the commoner games.

Some exceptions are trivia games, puzzles, basic deckbuilder boardgames, stuff like Bang!, Fluxx, a bunch of the shorter Steve Jackson games. Once I played Settlers of Catan and that was fun.  Battlestar Galactica was not.

Dungeons and Dragons? Nope, too long (the group I played with had 10 hour sessions) and I argue with the DM.
Magic the Gathering? I don't give a crap about building my deck super well and only really play against tournament level friends, so inevitably lose. Over and over. Fuck you Jace.
40k? Ok, too poor for it. And who're we kidding? I can't take models seriously.
Any console or computer? Well, that is practically another post but lets leave it be with the catchall "slow reflexes" explanation.

My dwarf lass in D&D was drawn excellently
I altered a forest once, then got bored after realizing it might only sell for a few bucks.
I love building and painting 40k models - and I'm starting a fantasy army just from the boyfriend's winnings.
It has been suggested I might like Harvest Moon. My computer wouldn't run it. Well, maybe the really old one. DDR took me a very long time to get to medium, and my tenacity there was only because I needed the exercise.

Oh. Once I tried Vampire, the Masquerade. Larping ain't for me. Vampire posers. *mumbles incoherently*

Part of me thinks there is something else out there for me, and if I find it I will latch on to it like all kinds of crazy. Until then, I will still feel slightly inferior about my nerd/geek status.

Change, change, change chaaaange.

Delirium!

From http://fc03.deviantart.net/fs7/i/2005/164/4/d/Delirium_by_Candra.jpg

Yeah, things change. I was taken in by my co-workers, bless! Now I'm not homeless, and I live in a house again!

Boyfriend remains amazing, and it is for his sake I've asked for about a month of non-dating to get my head on a bit - unscrewed describes me kindly of late. Going to a few group meetings, meditating, soul searching, chilling with friends, exercising, sleeping, watching FMA Brotherhood (lol), reading fashion blogs, and generally figuring out what is unscrewing me so hard core.

I'm trying to spend every day smiling, positive, filling my head with beautiful images and gratitude instead of the negative, and this blog is to be a part of that daily effort to reconstruct myself, and an effort to keep me from becoming completely depressed as I used to.

This will be a hybrid fashion/nerdery/diy/goth/self improment/book/paleo/tv/anime/music/comics/minimalist whatever sort of thing. Probably less of the introspection and more of the interests - since its more fun to write self stroking drivel with a New York Public Library pen into a college-ruled pinstripe composition book anyway.
